Down the Rabbit Hole: SARAH BROWN

Our designers are at the heart of Black Box, with each glorious item we sell being a product of an independent designer’s wonderful imagination. We think it’s time you’re introduced to the faces behind the work.

SARAH BROWN

One of the two jewellers behind Black Box, Sarah creates her stunning jewellery in the Black Box Workshop at the back of the boutique. Originally hailing from Islay, off Scotland’s west coast, Sarah finds her home island a rich source of inspiration…

BB: Describe your style in 3 words.

SB: Organic, spontaneous, details

BB: What inspires you and your work?

SB: My beautiful island home. The rugged coastline, the underwater forests & the patterns formed by the lichens and barnacles on the rocks. Every time you go to the beach it’s different, the tide constantly changes the shoreline.

BB: What’s your earliest memory of being creative?

SB: I used to love sitting on the beach down from my house stringing shells onto bits of washed up rope and dried grass.

BB: Give us a brief run through of your average day in the studio

SB: My day is normally split in two. The first half of the day is spent at my workbench at home carving wax and creating new pieces . The other half is spent in the workshop working with metal and creating the finished pieces. A wee trip out to the Post Office is normally slotted in somewhere, always help to go out and get some fresh air!

BB: Are there any parts of the design process you love / hate?

SB: I hate the monotony of cleaning up the same casts over and over again.

I love the spontaneity of being able to develop a piece as and when the design comes to life in the wax. There is no specific design in mind, my pieces come to life as they’re being made.

BB: How do you tackle designer’s block?

SB:  By going back out into the landscape that inspires me and doing as much drawing as possible.  I also find it helps to surround myself in beautiful objects and art when I’m struggling to design new pieces.  Pinterest is really good as well, you can create boards of inspirational images and thoughts that help to consolidate your ideas.

BB: Do you have a favourite piece?

SB: I’m really enjoying designing pieces around un-cut stones again so maybe one of my bespoke double-sided pieces using a mixture of rough and cut stones.

BB: What would be your dream creative project?

SB: Creating a collection of jewellery for a fantasy film, I would have loved to have made the jewellery for Lord of the Rings!

BB: If you could collaborate with another designer/artist who would it be?

SB: Isabel Marant.  I really love drawing and creating patterns so it would be great to collaborate with a fashion designer to see how different the finished products would turn out in fabric rather than metal.

BB: If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing?

SB: I have absolutely no idea, probably something awful and boring.

BB: If you could move your studio to somewhere new, where would you go?

SB: I would probably go back to one of Scotland’s amazing western islands and pick a nice spot with a view of the sea – very predictable!

BB: What’s on your studio playlist at the moment?

SB: I’m very guilty of listening to the same thing over and over until I’m completely sick of it, at the moment it’s Santigold, Cat Power & Bon Iver

BB: Who would you love to own one of your pieces?

SB:  Audrey Tautou or Clemence Poesy they both have such beautiful style.

Home comforts and solitary past-times

NEW DESIGNER ALERT! We now have a wonderful new collection of prints in the boutique from the immensely talented Yelena Bryksenkova! HOORAH!

YBR7

Long-time fans of Yelena’s work, we just couldn’t resist inviting the New England-based illustrator aboard our curious ship (box-shaped ship? that’s a curious ship for sure…this analogy is working, right?…). Born in Russia, and raised in the US, Yelena’s work is inspired the home and ‘the comfort of everyday objects’. We think the paintings have a gentle feel of timelessness, as well as reflecting an enigmatic sense of place. With a beautiful portfolio of paintings, we have curated a starter collection of prints to whet your appetite…

To see the full collection, why not pop into the boutique for a nosey (before they’re snapped up!) ?

We’d love to see you.

Black Box’s Quick Fix Guide to the Perfect Valentine’s Present

It’s that time of year, love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching again.

The time of year where the streets are filled with panicked gentlemen wearing confused faces, desperately seeking something that will bring a smile (and if they’re lucky a joyful tear) to their other half. As Black Box’s First Valentines Day, we are offering a quick fix guide to take the pressure off the present, giving you more time to enjoy the good old fashioned love that brought you together in the first place.

We want to make this February 14th as dreamy as possible, where Frank Sinatra sings you through your day, little bluebirds take over that pesky housework, and the men become hopelessly charming Cary Grants and Clark Gables. Come down to Black Box and we’ll do our best to make sure your day of romance runs as smoothly as a Disney fairytale (minus the Wicked Witch, of course).

In this short but sugary post we’ll show you how to find out a ring size without them finding out, give you some quick hints to help sussing out her taste in jewellery that little bit easier, show you some of the tempting treasures available in the boutique, and finally, invite you to our Valentines Treat Weekend at the boutique.

FINDING THE RIGHT PIECE OF JEWELLERY FOR YOUR LOVELY LADY

The key is to look at what she already wears and how she wears it. If you can answer just a couple of these questions, it will make finding the perfect piece of jewellery that little bit easier :

ABOUT HER

-          Does she wear classic, understated jewellery, or does she tend to prefer bolder, statement pieces? (An easy way to gauge her preference towards size of jewellery is to use coins. E.g. If the main part of her jewellery (the pendant / top of a ring / front of earrings, etc.) tend to be the size of a 5p, then she probably  likes modest, delicate jewellery, whereas if it tends to be larger than a 50p, then most likely bigger, bolder pieces are more her taste.)

-          Does she like flowery / geometric / quirky / blinging pieces?

ABOUT HER JEWELLERY

-          Does she wear gold / silver, or prefer alternative materials like plastics / wood / fabric?

-          Is there a lot of colour in her jewellery box?

-          Which does she wear most often? :

            NECKLACES         –              short / long

RINGS                   –              one’s she never takes off / does she have lots of different ones

EARRINGS           –              studs / long danglies

BRACELETS          –              moveable links like chain / solid bangles

After you have the answers to a combination of these questions, pop into the boutique and we’ll do our best to match your lady to a curious piece of jewellery – HURRAH! Why not pop in this weekend…See below for details :)
